HFSS Calculator

This is a guide that will show you how to access and use the Erudus HFSS Calculator in your Erudus Manufacturer account.

What is the HFSS Calculator?

The HFSS Score Calculator is an essential tool for assessing whether a food or drink product is classified as High in Fat, Sugar, or Salt (HFSS) according to the UK government's Nutrient Profiling Model (NPM). This model is used to identify products considered "less healthy" and thus subject to restrictions on promotions and placement in certain physical and online marketplaces.

The calculator automates the complex scoring system developed by the Department of Health to give a single numerical score, based on the product's nutritional composition per 100g/ml.

Quick Overview

When logged into Erudus, viewing the Manufacturing Dashboard.

Select Tools.

Select HFSS Calculator.

Complete the attributes required for the calculation and click the "Calculate HFSS Score" Button

Using the HFSS Calculator | Step 1

From the Manufacturer Dashboard, click the "Tools" button and click the "HFSS Calculator" option from the dropdown:

You will then be presented with the attributes to complete in order to calculate the HFSS score for your product. The values are to be entered per 100g/ml of the product and the attributes required are:

Whether the product is a Food or a Drink
Energy (kJ)
Saturated Fat (g)
Total Sugar (g)
Sodium (mg) - if you do not know the sodium value, you can enter the salt value and the calculator will populate the sodium value
Fruit, Vegetable & Nut content (%)
Fibre (g)
Fibre Type (NSP or AOAC)
Protein (g)

When you have completed the form with all of the attributes required for the calculation, you then click the "Calculate HFSS Score" button at the bottom of the page

If you do not complete all of the fields required to perform the calculation, the fields that need to be completed will be highlighted in red after pressing the "Calculate HFSS Score" button

Provided all the attributes have been completed, once you click the "Calculate HFSS Score" button you will be presented with the HFSS score for the product.

The score will be highlighted red if the product is considered HFSS, and highlighted green if the product is not considered HFSS

For Foods: A product is classified as HFSS if the final score is 4 or more

For Drinks: A product is classified as HFSS if the final score is 1 or more
